the gift of sons

Desmond Tutu said "You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them. "

I adore my children and their children. Our gatherings are a whirlwind of color and bustle. They are the gift that keeps on giving.

I have raised two of the most admirable sons. They are amazing fathers. I am in awe of what exceptional men they have become. Their growing up years were not easy on them or me and that is an understatement. It is like we all needed powerful buffing and now they shine.

These presents from God originally wrapped in soft blue flannel are as human as can be and that makes me love them more. They are tough and soft and they make mistakes. But they have the courage to admit their wrongs and they try to make amends. There are lovely moments when their children lean into them as if they are a united front facing the world.
And they belong to me.
